Hi Wolfie. Nice to hear from you. We hope to have 5010 kHz on the air by March 25. We're working on it now. We will be using one of the existing antennas. Incidentally, we did use a few years ago 5015 kHz. I forget which antenna we used with that, but it was one of the existing antennas. So we should be on the air with 5010 by March 25 if all goes well. All the best. These are the two times that international SW broadcasters usually change their frequencies to suit the seasons of the year, the propagation conditions of those seasons and the beginning/end of daylight saving time in some countries. Although SW stations can alter their transmissions on any given day, these two blocks of time are the major periods of changing times and frequencies. The A18 season begins this year on March 25 and ends on October 28. Then the B18 season will go into effect, ending in late March of 2019. This is generally set through the International Telecommunication Union in Geneva, Switzerland. You can learn more about the ITU and their mandate as set by the United Nations by going to their website located at www.itu.net. Winter and Summer Months (local time/area) Most DXers tend to listen to Longwave during the winter months, as there is more night than day during local wintertime, and the signals usually travel farther. This is also true for Mediumwave, as an hour or so before local sunset to sunrise the next morning is the best time to listen for DX signals on the MW spectrum. SW signals are somewhat different; broadcasts are easier to hear on lower frequencies during longer periods of darkness such as autumn and winter. The higher SW frequencies usually stay "open" later into the evening (before nightfall) for hearing stations during the summer months. Summer is also the best time for FM DXing, as signals can travel during sporadic-E (ionospheric layer) and tropo (weather disturbances, temperature inversions and the like) much further than line-of-sight. This being said, propagation conditions can change from one day to the next, so it's always good to check the various bands before making a decision on listening and DXing. The Solar Cycle The solar cycle is an approximately 11-year period of greater and lesser sunspot/magnetic activity on the sun. The greater the number of sunspots, the better radio reception can be. This happens because the sunspot activity increases the ionization of the atmosphere and the ionosphere "bounces" signals back to earth more. This increased activity can also increase the MUF or Maximum Usable Frequency in the HF spectrum. The current sunspot/solar cycle is called Cycle 24 began in December of 2008, reached its peak in 2014 (it was one of the "lowest" high peaks on record), and should end sometime around 2019 or 2020. Then we will begin Cycle 25. These have been numbered dating back to the mid-18th century. We can only hope that this upcoming Solar Cycle will bring better propagation and reception in the next decade. A reminder to hobbyists in North America that if your area changes to Daylight Saving Time, it occurs at 2 am local time on Sunday, March 11th. Remember that this will not alter UTC, which continues on its merrily consistent way! Happy Spring to all of our readers in the Northern Hemisphere... here in Ontario we are beginning to thaw out after a warm autumn but at times a bitterly cold winter. Until April... 73, keep smiling and keep listening, J O E BC-DX 1335, 27 February 2018 Editor : Wolfgang Bueschel, Germany ----------------- INDIA/ARMENIA AIR Urdu this morning Feb 19. Radio Dacha is broadcasting in the northern capital at a frequency of 97.0 FM and is one of the five most popular music radio stations in the city. Every week more than 950 thousand inhabitants of St. Petersburg are being tuned to the frequency of Radio Dacha. The license for radio broadcasting "Radio Dacha" in St. Petersburg belongs to Krutoy Media. Executive Director - Dmitry Korovkin. The official site of Radio Dacha: www.radiodacha.ru. (http://www.krutoymedia.ru/news/5190.htm) March 1. On March 1, 1996, the empty FM band was filled with callsigns of the first Belgorod radio station "Babylon". At its sources stood Vitaliy Chebotarev (who is also Arthur Likhachev) - was the editor of the station and led the program for applications, Stepanida Polyanskaya, a little later - Vasily Pautov (on the air - Valentin Vasiliev), Andrei Ludan (also Melomanov), Andrey Chistyakov and Vladimir Polovnev, Vadim Gradov and Ekaterina Stefanova, Victor "Garryn" Plotnikov, who came up with the name "Babylon" and many other people. "Babylon" in a short time has gained immense popularity, thanks to the popular musical content and communication with the original radio presenters. Local broadcasting made it possible to create many musical, humorous, analytical, children's programs, morning and evening shows. The hosts also appeared on the night air. (https://vk.com/radio.tv_31) March 1. March 1, 2005 at 102.7 there was a new radio station for the city - "Radio 7 on seven hills". At the frequency there is a unique combination of 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s, classical music. On Radio 7, the same team that used to work at the same frequency 102., 7 FM did "Russian radio-Belgorod". In the air, the usual voices of Julia Bespalko, Alexei Zaitsev, Inna Orekhova and Stepanida Polyanskaya sounded. In addition, "Radio 7 on the Seven Hills" has gradually appeared in many cities of the region at frequencies designed for "Russian Radio", providing a huge audience of 1.4 million potential listeners. RC №1. 10 kW Radio "Eli" is 1035 kHz. Estonia, Tartu. 100 kW Radio Liberty 1386 kHz. Lithuania. Veshintos. 75 kW " Vesti FM "1413 kHz, PMR, Mayak 500 kW Many who stepped into the world of radio waves and stayed in it, began with the elementary - from the detector radio. A simple design that allows you to get the result with minimum details. It's much easier. As I remember now, with fear of being seen on the spot, carefully sorted out the books in the grandfather's secretary. The goal was one - the necessary literature and details. In the end, everything was ready: a germanium diode, a self-made coil, a variable capacitor from a tube receiver, and the most deficient: high-impedance headphones TON-2. The antenna was made of a thin wire type PEL, placing it under the ceiling. Earthing from the battery. Gathering all simple farming and wearing headphones - hid. A couple of rotations of the condenser: Radio "Mayak". Behind him appeared: "Radio of Russia", "Orpheus", "Star". Delight was no limit. Reception, as I remember now, was loud enough. The blessing was relatively close to the source of broadcasting: Radiocenter No. 1, to Olgino. Internet then I did not have. Frequency of broadcasting of my "catch" collected using branded receivers. So, gradually, the first data on the broadcasting of medium-wave stations in my region was collected. At night, the middle waves revived and I accepted with pleasure the foreign radio stations, even if not in a language known to me. Years passed. Rather, they even fled. And I could hardly keep up with them. At our dacha passed all my holidays. And always unchanged, I started a new day with the sounds of "Lighthouse" from the lamp radiator "Harp". Grandpa wakes up early, at 7 am. And the first thing to do is to switch on the heating of the radio, which woke me up at 9 o'clock. The broadcasts on "Mayak" were remarkable: "Music as a gift", "Musical automaton", "What's old" and many others. You lie - and you do not want to get up. And having twisted the radio or transistor "Mountaineer -2", there was an opportunity to plunge into the world of distant and unexplored. Romance generation, which grew up without the Internet. And then .... And then came the most dreary. Each other began to leave the airwaves old-timers. First with long waves, then with medium. The lighthouse was turned off in 2013, "Radio of Russia" in 2015. And the disconnection of "Russia" I found during the time of service in the ranks of the RF Armed Forces. In the far north, the widely known range of VHF-2 (FM) is taken in places and very insecure. I had a small pocket receiver with several bands. And catching a familiar signal from silence, it was a little joy. "Radio of Russia" was that connected thread, which raised the mood and entertained on watch. After listening to Viktor Tatarsky's program "Meeting with the song" on the 31.01.15, in the evening of 1.02, I found the absence of a single station. And how much I did not twist the receiver, trying to catch the signal with a magnetic antenna - in vain. Only then did I learn that Radio Rossiya is no longer on the middle waves. In the soul sat insult, a kind of betrayal. How ... why ... why .... Today, from our powerful broadcasting remained crumbs. And not even these crumbs are noticeable, but the big loaf from which they stayed. Dozens of radio centers around the country are under conservation. Antennas, transmitters .... The technology, over which the best minds of the country worked, is now out of the question and the further perspective of the radio centers of powerful broadcasting is vague. I sit, I write these lines, and the receiver is next to me. In addition to the radio station "Vesti FM" with a single transmitter in Transdniestria, our long-distance medium-wave airwaves are empty. 4 years ago the Voice of Russia was silent on the air, and there is no such radio station anymore. Who is guilty ? Well, of course not radio centers. Refused broadcasters themselves, because they are asked for a price list, and money from state-owned broadcasting companies was not found. Such a paradox. Years later, I happened to be there, from where I received the first signals of radio stations to the detector receiver. I saw with my own eyes the tube giants - but alas, already silent. I was able to communicate with those who have maintained their unique equipment for many years. With professionals who are insanely fond of their work and have shone on him all his life. Probably naive, but still I hope that at least some of the radio centers will sometime sound again. Powerful broadcasting and foreign broadcasting - the face of the country on the international air. The current state of affairs in these matters leaves only hope. Wait and see. (https://vk.com/club59176345) History of radio communication in Siberia --------------------------------------------- Author: Andrey, R8OAG, 18.07.2000 The fifth part. ------------------ A major role in the development of radio broadcasting in Siberia was played by the local branch of SDT. Originally created as the "Friends of Radio" Society, soon the SDT fell under organizational and financial dependence, and in general under full control from the state (as well as broadcasting in general). Already in 1929, the West Siberian Regional Department of the ODR acted on the basis of the charter approved by the Council of People's Commissars of the USSR, had sections of short waves, scientific and technical, military, agitation- mass, youth. In Novosibirsk, the department belonged to: a radio workshop manufacturing transceiving equipment, and a broadcasting node transmitting local and non-resident transmissions by wire for its subscribers. The subordinate workshops of SDTs were in Tomsk, Omsk, Barnaul. According to SDT, in August 1926 there were 50 in Novosibirsk, 954 in the district, and 4,444 radio amateurs throughout Siberia. In Novosibirsk, there were 5 loudspeakers and 35 individual installations. In total, 17 collective and 127 individual radio installations operated in Siberia. To receive radio signals, the industry offered to the population detector receivers "DV-3", "DV-4", "DV-5". They began to be produced in 1927 at the Moscow Electromechanical Plant "MEMZA". The receiver worked in the range from 300 to 2000 m. A rough adjustment was carried out by switching the turns, and a smooth adjustment by a vario meter. The decoration is a painted wooden case with instructions for use pasted on it. Let's talk about radio listeners. By January 1926, Siberia registered 209 registered collective and individual radio receivers. In general, low-power, detector. There were 83 lamps. Only 34 receivers were equipped with loudspeakers. By the beginning of 1927 receivers in Siberia had been registered 450, and a year later - 2,287, in another six months - up to 5000. In the summer of 1927, a radiofrequent agitation ship "Altai" flew along the Ob River. On the parking deck on the deck, local residents were invited to listen to the radio programs collectively. The interest in the first radio broadcasts was truly enormous: there were 70 to 180 listeners in the clubs and reading rooms that gathered the loudspeakers. From year to year the number of radio amateurs and lucky owners of radio receivers increased. In the first days on the radio there were concerts with the participation of Novosibirsk artists. Subsequently, the program programs began to include reports on public and political issues, lectures, TASS news. In 1926-1927 years. at the radio station under the guidance of musician V.A. Girman was formed the orchestra of folk instruments, now known to the world as the Russian Academic Orchestra GTRK "Novosibirsk". In the early 30-ies musicians-enthusiasts created another music band radio - a symphony orchestra. In 1927 in Novonikolaevsk there is also a wire radio broadcasting. In the building at the intersection of Maxim Gorky and Krasny Prospekt streets the first radio facility was opened. It was equipped with amplifying equipment of 50 watts, made by the forces of radio amateurs. The first objects of radiocommunication were Lenin Square. At the beginning of 1927, loudspeakers were installed in the streets of Zheleznodorozhny, Ippodromsky, Zaeltsovsky and Factory districts to enable listening to radio broadcasts to those townspeople who did not have their own receivers. In 1928, in the building where the Novosibirsk Post Office is now located, the first amplifying station was built on the basis of industrial equipment with a capacity of 400 watts. In 1931 in Berdsk radio transmission unit was installed to serve the collective farm sector. In 1934 the radio station was moved to Lenin's House, the power of the amplifying station reached already 1 kW (now the power of the GTRS amplifier station is more than 350 kW).
