The formal ceremony in Norway will be watched by many countries around the world who themselves are heading towards a digital radio future, including the UK. Norway is the first country in the world to move the majority of its radio stations off FM. Norway has 25 national radio channels via DAB and currently has five national radio channels via FM. The DAB network now covers the same as FM. 54% of digital listeners listen to radio on DAB; 19 per cent of digital listeners are on the net. Local radio stations outside the main cities will continue to broadcast in FM. The FM networks will be switched off region by region, starting in Nordland. The event will take place in Bodø and the final switch-off will be done at 11.11 pm CET. The Norwegian Radio industry will be present in Bodø, represented by head of NRK radio and commercial radio. Also, head of BBC Radio, Helen Boaden, and head of Radio at EBU, Graham Dixon, will attend. An international seminar for European broadcasters will be held the day before the historic move to FM switch-off and an international press-conference will be broadcast on inRad.io via radio.no at 1pm GMT. Representatives from Digital Radio UK will be at the event, and will keep RadioToday readers up-to-date with developments from next week. Reaction to the plan to remove stations from FM has not been welcomed in Norway, with a last-ditch attempt to postpone the move failing in the Norwegian parliament. http://radio.no/countdown/ (http://bclnews.blogspot.ru/2017/01/norway-to-start-fm-switchover-on.html) * USA ------ VOA celebrates 75 years on 1 February 2017 The Voice of America celebrates its 75th anniversary on February 1, 2017. In honor of this momentous occasion, we are taking you on a journey around the U.S. to showcase vibrant and exciting celebrations that take place in various diaspora communities every year. From Persian New Year celebrations in Los Angeles to the West Indian American Day Parade in New York City, to Carnival in Puerto Rico, these celebrations highlight the multicultural diversity that makes the United States what it is today. For example, did you know that the Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D.C. all started with a gift of cherry trees from the mayor of Tokyo more than 100 years ago? Voice of America's audience growth has been exponential. In fact, our 2016 numbers were the highest to date. We now reach a record number of 236.6 million people weekly around the globe through various platforms - television, radio, and the web. Every year more people get their news and information from digital platforms, so we placed a greater emphasis on social media this year, and our numbers skyrocketed. VOA sites now enjoy nearly seven million hits weekly from people around the world. A series of articles about Boris Skuratovsky Ukrainian broadcasting history (mainly post-Soviet period). Judging by the comments, previously printed in the journal Mediasat ... http://mediasat.info/tag/ukrainskoe-radioveshhanie/ (Leo Barmaleo / "open_dx") - Yes indeed. This "epic" was written in 2008, it was printed in 2008-2009. That is, in the somewhat outdated :) Just now, Mediasat puts online that was printed at the time in the "paper" version. (Boris L.Skurativsky / "open_dx") * National Council promulgated the names of four stations, which won the tender for radio frequencies, and will be broadcast in the Crimea with Chongaro. This is the agency "Liga.Novosti" referring to the press service of the National Council. So, its broadcasting in the Crimean peninsula will start the radio station "Radio Crimea. Realities "," Ukrainian Radio "," TRK "Sofia" and "TK" Atlant-SV ". At the same time, the current administration of the Crimean Peninsula says it will not allow penetration into the territory of the Crimea any broadcast from the Ukraine, promising to use the necessary technical means. Kostinsky also said that the Ukrainian block signal does not work, because "not enough of telecommunications infrastructure." It should be noted that the upcoming public broadcaster will be available three new radio frequencies. (Mediasat, Nikita Naumov - December 29, 2016) * 5 December 2016. 522 kHz Radio Ukraina International (Ukraine) 19:57 UTC a good reception. TECSAN R-333cloud.mail.ru/public/JqEj/h6zmd9Wuf It seems to 1431kHz ... - It seems UR1 at 549 kHz is already working without day break 12-14 UTS. - Radio Hvilya (Vinnitsa) on 1377 kHz, 1300 UTC, ATS-909X + AN-200. Identification at 1:50 - Not bad heard, but could not make out what announcer declares - such as "Radio Vinsera". Can a company selling Winser antenna AM / FM radio? And behind it clearly understood the announcer said, "Radio Khvylya". In Kiev R.Hvylya heard briefly in the twilight. Hours allegedly 07-15.30 UTS. - Radio announcer announces Wintera. Their broadcaster VODTRK called "Wintera". - Radioman, you 1, and I take. You know better about Ukrainian radio than I do. I hear it for the first time. I found that this Vinnitsa Regional Directorate TRC "Wintera". But "Radio Wintera" - in my opinion is no such thing in the MW ether did not exist before. "Radio Khvylya" only. Or maybe I'm just so far behind? He clarifies that the RU1 at 549 kHz added for 1 hour and at the end of the day. Now continuously 06-24 RBM, which is three hours more than before. Now besides RU1 programs will again be heard R.Svoboda program 15.40-16.00 Ukrainian time. I wonder if R.Krym. Realii transmission will not stop at 8.35 and 18.30 in the 549 kHz due to the fact that it will soon have to enter a new transmitter in the under construction in Chongar (Khersonskaya oblast) Rig, which has to work 24 hours on 105.9 MHz. Prognosis is unknown, but it is clear that there will be broadcasted R.Krym. Realii program and maybe something else. Then for me the intrigue. The DSWCI homepage is planned to be online for at least another four years. It will contain the electronic archives of the DSWCI, namely - back issues of Shortwave News from 2003 to 2016 - almost all issues of DX Window from # 1 in 1996 to # 570 in 2016 - all issues of Domestic Broadcasting Survey from 1999 to 2016 - all issues of Tropical Bands Monitor from 2005 to 2016 - Niels Jakob Jensen's DX-collection - and more The URL is the same as always: The homepage is no longer password-protected. Everyone can access the full content. Anker Petersen will continue to publish "Tropical Bands Monitor" monthly. You can download the latest issue from the homepage. He also plans to issue the "Domestic Broadcasting Survey" in the coming years. It will be sent out by e-mail on request and it will be published on the homepage. Just look under "Latest News". Besides the monthly update of "Tropical Bands Monitor", there will be very little news, as the homepage is now mainly an archive. Therefore, we won't continue the DSWCI Newsletter. As I have always promised, I will now delete your e-mail address from my address book. You have still the possibility to contact me by e-mail Our tipseditor Klaus-Dieter Scholz continues with tips from former DSWCI- members at his own homepage And last - but not least - you still can buy the DVD with all editions of Shortwave News from 1957 to 2015 The ADDX radio club has promised an update for buyers of the DVD containing the 2016 issues and a full-text search for 1957 - 2016. It will be published on our homepage. Just look under "Latest News". Now it is time to say thank you for your loyalty. I wish you a happy new year and the very best for the future. (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) 12020, Dec 26 after 0100, no signal from SM Radio International, special to S America. The final repeat, 7305 at 0300 to North America, finds no signal at 0311, and a JBA carrier at 0342. Sorry, but Armenia is just not a suitable site for reaching North America under the circumstances (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 1858, DX LISTENING DIGEST) 26.12.16, 0300-0400 UT, 7305 kHz, Noratus 330 degrees (North America), SM Radio International {Noratus = CJSC Yerevan Gavar Armenia site} Best regards - Christian Milling (via wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Dec 22 via DXLD) for Christian: Bad propagation from Caucasus towards North America tonight in 41 mb 7305, Quinn show noted at 0301 UT, 25$ on contest 0311 UT, little drummer boy ra ta da dam at 0313 UT, only S=9+25dB signal in Moscow Russia, and S=4-5 in northern Sweden at Haparanda. But only N I L signal in Michigan, NJ/MA east coast, N I L signal in Spain, Netherlands, Sweden, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Greece. In 49mb only two European 6020 CRI Albania S=6-7, and 5960 kHz NHK Issoudun S=8. Only others from the south could be heard in North America (Wolfgang Büschel, dxldyg via WORLD OF RADIO 1858, DX LISTENING DIGEST) SM Radio via Gavar, Armenia 0300 UT to North America pretty much a bust. Nil heard on several SDRs around North America. Barely marginal signal with deep and long fades using receivers in Sweden and the U.K. Nothing at all on SDRs in Austria, Germany, and Italy. This was the "Ron O'Quinn Show," from one of the former offshore DJs heard earlier on the Mi Amigo special broadcast. The lousy propagation of late doesn't help but Armenia just is not a good choice if you're trying to get a consistently decent signal into North America, I think. Even Nauen has a hard time some weekends. It's a pity the latter has to let their transmitters "loaf" along at a mere 125 kW (cost of electricity?). To reach people in North America who have simple portable receivers from Europe you really need something like the 500 kW senders at Issoudun, but I'm sure the cost would be prohibitive. 73, (Andy Robins, Kalamazoo, Michigan USA, UT Dec 26, dxldyg via WORLD OF RADIO 1858, DX LISTENING DIGEST) 7305 kHz SM Radio International, S=9+10dB in Doha Qatar at 0340 UT, bad co-channel MIXTURE with BBC Persian language sce from UAE Al Dhabbaya, latter increase to S=9+25dB at 0352 UT (Wolfgang Büschel, ibid.) (Ivo Ivanov, QTH: Sofia, Bulgaria, dxldyg via DX LISTENING DIGEST) What is NORATUS? WRTH 2017 says `Gavar, Noratus` as if it were a location, not an agency, and certainly not an acronym or initialism requiring all-caps. And address, with postal code? as ``3333 Noratus``. The transmitter operator is CJSC = Closed Joint Stock Company, which seems like a description akin to Inc., Ltd. Or LLC, rather than a corporate name itself. Noratus name looks rather Latinate, so could it be something Christian/Orthodox? No particular meaning known to Google translate. Answer: ``Noratus is a village near the town of Gavar, most famous for its cemetery, the oldest part of which includes over 800 khachkars (stone crosses), carved between the 9th-17th centuries.`` From Yerevan it is 95 km or one sesquihour away [by road?], so designating the SW site ERV is hardly accurate. And now the Armenians are publicizing their cemetery attraxion thus, without moving the SW antennas one cm, I bet. So are they really closer to Noratus than Gavar? Surely not within the cemetery, tho there is a certain kinship between crosses and antenna towers (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Upcoming broadcasts of Shortwaveservice via NORATUS: Radio Menschen & Geschichten: 1900-2000 6145 ERV 100 kW / 305 deg to WeEu English Jan 01 Radio Golden 80s Rewind: 2000-2100 6145 ERV 100 kW / 305 deg to WeEu English Jan 01 ADDX: 1900-2000 6145 ERV 100 kW / 305 deg to WeEu English Jan 14 http://swldxbulgaria.blogspot.bg/2016/12/upcoming-broadcasts-of-shortwaveservoce.html 73!
