In the USSR, radios were produced even on a nuclear battery!
-------------------------------------------------- --------
It would seem that it's easier than that: I bought batteries, inserted them into the radio receiver and rejoice. True,
these batteries will soon "sit down" and you will again have to run to the store for new ones. From a commercial point
of view, the radio is an ideal source of constant profit from the sale of batteries. Therefore, Western manufacturers of
portable equipment were made on disposable batteries.
In the USSR, the approach to technology was different: if possible, get away from the need to constantly buy
batteries. With voracious tube technology, this was difficult, because. two different batteries were required: high
voltage (75 volts) for the anode circuits and with a high current for heating the radio tubes. Here is a classic example:
Tourist portable tube radios.

What is the station operating in FM mode on short waves?
-----------------------------------------
Having finished listening to medium waves on a homemade antenna strung on the balcony, I switched to short
waves. And then, at the very beginning of the range, at a frequency of 2130 kHz, I came across a station operating in
FM mode (frequency modulation). But how is that even possible. Previously, I heard about the FM (FM) mode only on
ultra-short waves. Even the broadcasting range is called FM, and here at the very beginning of short waves.
I decided to listen to what this station is transmitting. It turned out to be voice talks. Several people were talking. One
of them, as I understood the dispatcher, and the rest of the operators, as I later found out, are the train drivers who
communicate with each other. But why such a strange choice of frequency and modulation?

It seems that TWR is on 621:
https://www.mwlist.org/mwlist_quick_and_easy.php?area=1&kHz=621
Rather interesting is that the maps link points to the directional antenna (maybe the type заря). The link from 1548
also points there.
Does anybody know which is being used?

I have recorded 621 kHz [PMR] from 2 until 9 AM last two nights to monitor just in case there would be changes,
Radio 1 Plus was audible with old soviet schlager music and clear ID in the early morning. Very low audio and short
digital drop outs. however, NO trace of TWRs program on this frequency before or after. Not even the very destinctive
interval signal was heard there.
Obviously using VERY directional antenna pattern towards East - or they were just not on. Power of 621 is quite less
then 1413/999. And feeder signal of Radio 1 Plus certainly via webstream.

According to the post from Robert, it seems that 621 comes from the directional MW antenna (заря).
Does 1548 also come from that?
If it is a directional signal, it might come from the 4 mast ARRT array (квадрат). These are quite interesting.
47.283198611248174,
29.4288938649112
Look at the feeder lines, they go further than the antenna. I don't know the reason for that yet.
Radioens reports that Vesti FM (вести фм) 1413 kHz uses this 4 mast ARRT directional antenna. mwlist points to an
non-directional mast without a ARRT cage antenna.

The frequency 621 KHz was the suggestion of Grigoriopol to exchange/replace 999, but now at 18.15 h UTC on 621
are usual Arab/Iran and not TWR.
TWR on 999 used 500 KW, but now 1413 is 1000 and 999 with just 500 KW, so for TWR is only 150 KW used by
Radio 1 from Tiraspol will be ?

unofficial that they use 1413 and didn't announce that.

PMR frequencies: 999 kHz is definitely strongest here, no more trace of Rai IT which used to be present here before.
also stronger than TWR has been in the past! probably 1000 kW for this?!
1413 comes next, strong and clear most of the time but gets swamped out by 500 watts UK station at certain point,
presumed 500 kW from a directional system twrds east.
621 kHz only on air during the early morning hours with vy. weak and vy. directional signal. checked the whole
evening and no trace of TWR here. only Spain (10 kW) heard! "TWR Ukrainian&Russian&Belarusian 1730-1935″
listed for 621 but no single sign of this today. forgot to check 1548 today but I will do tomorrow.
Just a reminder: 621 kHz is only active on weekdays (Mo-Fr) with the "Radio 1plus" oldie music in russian language,
never heard on Sat or Sun. guess this is the old x-mitter.

621 does not carry any signal at all ! [621 kHz is NOT on air Sat/Sun / Ed]

LITHUANIA Baltic Waves on MW1386 kHz past 2100 UTC with maybe Ukrainian.
Indeed, when I listened via the Karelia Perseus SDR 1386 kHz was the
strongest at 21:50 with the daily "fireside chat" by President Volodomyr
Zelensky. Much stronger than // 1287 kHz (also very strong), 873, 1404 and
657 (between poor and fair) with ongoing "Marafon" programming of joint
Ukrainian television and radio. At 22:00 UT, dead air briefly, then con-
tinued with same program. Primarily for internal consumption. For
example, in the clip sent to me by Kim, a warning for air raid / missile
attack for the Odessa and Mykolaiv oblasts in south Ukraine was made.
After 22:00 UT, lots of reports on ruSSian atrocities in the liberated
areas near to Kyiv (civilians with tied arms and legs shot in the back of
the head, etc)
(Walt Salmaniw-BC-CAN, wor April 4)
Re: Baltic Waves 1386 past 2100 UTC with maybe Ukrainian.
First report of it:
So it looks as if this started on April 1st. What remains is the question
about the schedule (2100 UT til when, all night long or closing at some
point?) and who books this relay, i.e. who pays for it.
And NHK rolled out its new concept of 21 or, in this case, 51 minutes
transmissions also onto the Lithuanian transmitter. It used to be 2 x 30
minutes of Russian. Now see both Russian and English in their complete
schedule for the crazy thing they have created. What kind of strategy is
this mess??
(Kai Ludwig-D, direct and wor April 4)
Where did the Baltic Waves Radio ID originate from and do we know where
this transmitter is?

Radio Baltic Waves 1386 AM (Viesintos site, Utena County, Lithuania,

re 1368 kHz - Radio Baltic Waves and Ukrainian Radio.
I have started to automatically record the hour starting at 0 hours UT of
Radio Baltic Waves on 1386 kHz carrying Ukrainian Radio, which has an
excellent signal into the University Enschede Twente SDR receiver, to
capture primarily the "Ukraine: security issue" English segment.
On 5 April (UT), the segment was presented by the slower reading OM. I did
notice during the hour that the audio dropped out for a couple of minutes
several times (not a gap in the transmitter output).
(Richard Langley-NB-CAN, direct and wor April 3 - 5)
Via and SDR in Russia, I was tuned to Radio Baltic Waves 1386 kHz today
(pn 3 April) at 2100 UT, expecting it to sign off after three hours of
RFE/RL Russian. But it stayed on the air, with another program. It might
be Ukrainian. Certainly many mentions of Ukraine. It can be heard clearly
via the Twente receiver.

Radio Ukraine via Litauen. Hallo Wolfgang,

MOLDOVA/RUSSIA/UKRAINE For many years TWR in Ukrainian, Russian, Roma /
Gipsy & Belorusian was on the air on MW 999 KHz via Radioteletsentr (PRTC)
transmitter Grigoriopol Maiac site [Pridnestrovie break away], replaces
TWR with Radio Rossii and from yesterday [April 5] their bc time 1730-1935
UT was replaced by progr of Radio Rossii(Rassii) in Russian.
On April the 5th, four transmitters of Ukrainian Radio were on the air on
MW 657, 873, 1278 & 1404 kHz.

Radio Rossii ueber Radioteletsentr (PRTC) transmitter Grigoriopol Maiac
Eventuell laeuft das also sogar
schon seit dem 1. April. Aufgefallen ist es jedenfalls vor ein paar
Stunden.
weiter an.

Re: Pridnestrovye MW 999 kHz replaces TWR with Radio Rossii.
The rental and payment of Maiac TWR, as well as CJSC Yerevan Gavar 1377
and/or 1395 kHz TWR relays always ran through the Moscow address and the
Russian FMO organization of 'RAM'.
This branch of business for TWR Europe/CeAsia via the Austria address /
or ERF Wetzlar Germany
breaks after the EU sanctions, and/or the western business rules is now
gone.
I am curious whether also TWR India with the Kyrgyz Bishkek Broadcast on
MW 1467 kHz and 5130v kHz Afghanistan TWR Pashto/Dari transmission 'Afghan
Christian R. / Sadaye Zindagi' will appear soon again.
India has not introduced commercial sanctions with Russia, after war
invasion into Ukraine country.

Re: Pridnestrovye MW 999 kHz replaces TWR with Radio Rossii.
TWR Gypsy was tonight on 1548 kHz as always. Open carrier for some time
until 1830 UT, then crash start into programming, separated by the next
one at 1845 UT by a single burst of TWR Monte Carlo IS - should altogether
be the same schedule than in B21, just one UT hour earlier.
They're only off 999 kHz, which is in use, apparently round the clock, by
Radio Rossii since April 5, running 1000 kW says someone who obviously is
in the know.
In this thread there is also a mention of TWR Russian on 1377 kHz, so it
would be desirable to establish the complete schedule. I don't see any
radio schedules at twr.org anymore, the previous schedule pages have been
deleted. Of course, they have to avoid the risk that their broadcasts are
intercepted.

USA/ARMENIA Re: Shortwaves for Freedom Updates. Latest update 3 April.
"We begin another week with up to four-and-a-half hours daily of crowd-
funded broadcasts - thanks to all of you - of VOA and RFE/RL programming
in Russian and English beaming to Russia, Ukraine and surrounding coun-
tries. Listener verification reports continue to arrive and we are tweak-
ing the times and frequencies to ensure the air-time we are purchasing is
the most effective within our budget to reach the target audiences.
"We continue to garner some publicity. The EWTN global Catholic TV network
featured 'Shortwaves for Freedom' in one of its news programs this past
week:
"Also, the Radio Panorama program in Russian on the World Radio Network
discussed our project:
"There are some adjustments to the schedule for our crowd-funded
broadcasts, effective today (Sunday, April 3):
"UTC Time Broadcast Frequency
0200-0300 Radio Svoboda (Russian) 7730 kHz
0400-0500 Radio Svoboda (Russian) 7730 kHz
1900-2000 Radio Svoboda (Russian) 9370 kHz
1930-2000 VOA Flashpoint Ukraine (English) (Mon-Fri) 15770 kHz
2100-2200 Radio Svoboda (Russian) 1395 kHz MW
"Please spread the word and encourage your friends and families to contri-
bute. A reminder that 100 percent of the net funds we receive from you go
to pay the private shortwave broadcasters to air our programs - there are
no salaries or administrative fees.
"We will continue to pay for airtime until our funds are depleted. At this
time, with the current schedule, we estimate we have enough in reserve for
a couple more months. We are hoping that the U.S. Agency for Global Media
(which oversees VOA and RFE/RL) will realize that shortwave, medium wave
and even long wave radio can be effective to reach those who are directly
affected by this war (and that includes the Russian people who are only
hearing a false portrayal of the war from their domestic media). Until
then, our mission continues thanks to you."

Japan

Verification cards of Japanese radio stations reached Moscow, which I managed to catch in the late summer - early
autumn of last year in the city of Ulan-Ude. The distance to Japan from the place of reception is just over 5 thousand
km. In the evening hours before sunset, it was possible to receive signals of different quality: unsatisfactory and
average.
A feature of regional radio stations in Japan is that they respond to reception reports from listeners with QSL cards.
True, in order to receive the coveted postcard, you need to send a report by regular mail, attaching a couple of US
dollars for a return answer. I duplicated my reports to the email addresses of radio stations.
So, the following cards were received:
Mainichi Broadcasting System (Osaka Prefecture) - received on 1179 kHz on August 28, 2021.
E-mail: http://www.mbs1179.com
Website: licensing@mbs.co.jp
Radio Nippon (Yokohama Prefecture) - Received on 1422 kHz on September 3, 2021.
E-mail: info@jorf.co.jp

Tokay Radio Broadcasting (Aichi Prefecture) - Received on 1332 kHz on September 4, 2021.

Philippines
----------------
e-QSL from Radyo Pilipinas.
The transmission in English was received on October 3, 2019 and October 6, 2020 in Ulan-Ude.
Due to coronavirus restrictions, it was not possible to send a paper card from the Philippine side. It looks like it can't
be done now either, so the station responded with an electronic QSL.

QSL, antenna and transmitter of Radio Delta! The letter offers to take part in the radio show! Quote:
I've attached our eQSL, thank you for your attention and nice acceptance report! In order to develop our weekly DX
show on Sunday mornings at 10:00 UTC, we would like to ask if you can create a private message for all DXers and
listeners (in your own language this is fine too). This can simply be done with your phone or other device, create an
MP3 and send it to our email. Together we can create a Radio Delta Shortwave community, I hope you will be a part
of our free radio show.

Radio Liberty* faces a 64 million ruble fine for not removing prohibited content.
------------------------------------
Radio Liberty* faces a fine of 64 million rubles for refusing to remove prohibited information from the site. It is
reported by TASS with reference to the 423rd world judicial district of Moscow. It is noted that the court received 16
protocols regarding the radio station under the second part of Article 13.41 of the Code of Administrative Offenses
(non-deletion by the owner of the site of information in the case when its removal is mandatory under the law of the
Russian Federation). On March 4, Roskomnadzor blocked the website of Radio Liberty* due to the "systematic
spread of fakes" about Russia's "military operation" in Ukraine. Access to the page is restricted on the basis of Article
15.3 of the Federal Law "On Information, Information Technologies and Information Protection". It allows you to block
resources with calls for riots, extremism, and with inaccurate socially significant information.
* Radio Liberty is recognized by the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation as a mass media outlet acting as a
foreign agent.
