The release of the first mass receivers for cars in 1930 was established by Motorola. Trial domestic broadcasts in this format began in 2012, and continuous broadcasts of CNR 1 (China National Radio's 1st program) began on shortwave in 2018 [1]. They were and are still being conducted with good quality in mono version. In 2019, transmissions began in stereo DRM via a 30-kilowatt transmitter in Beijing at 6030 kHz from 0600 to 1805 UTC. And in the spring of 2020, a stereo DRM signal went from Dongfang in the south of China at a frequency of 17770 kHz from 0053 to 0900 UTC, also broadcasting CNR 1. But the hardworking Chinese did not stop there. Not so long ago, the Fraunhofer Institute (Germany) developed xHE- AAC, a new DRM format with higher sound quality. This format has been used on several medium-wave domestic broadcast transmitters in India for about 2 years now, and Radio Marti in May 2020 began using it in HF broadcasts in Spanish towards Cuba and neighboring countries. In June 2020, China also began broadcasting domestic broadcasts in a new format through a 30-kilowatt transmitter in Dongfang on 4 frequencies at different times of the day. Today I was able to receive and decode their transmission in this format at a frequency of 17770 kHz around 0830 UTC, see video [2]. The receiver was SDRplay RSP1A, antenna: MiniWhip on the roof of a 4-storey building, QTH: Novosibirsk. On the site, by default, the picture quality is poor (360p), but by clicking on the gear, you can choose a good quality (HD 720p); you can also download the file for viewing in original with good quality. The xHE-AAC format, along with the old DRM format, is used in desktop receivers GR-216 from Gospell (China) [3] and in Kiwi receivers [4] available via the Internet [5]. Until recently, the popular free PC application DReaM [6] lacked compatibility with the new format. The application developers could do this, but then it will become paid, since the decoder is patented by the Fraunhofer Institute. Recently there was a craftsman who made a DReaM variant for this format [7]. It has a number disadvantages, but free. Links: 1. HANS JOHNSON. The KGB agent worked for Radio Svoboda for 20 years and left undisclosed. -------------------------------------------------- - During the Cold War, Radio Liberty was one of the main targets of Soviet intelligence, declassified documents show. In the work against American radio, not only KGB agents took part, but also the intelligence services of the Eastern Bloc states. Mediazona recalls the biography of Oleg Tumanov, editor of the Russian service of Radio Liberty, who worked for Moscow for 20 years. On February 14, 1986, Soviet intelligence lieutenant colonel Viktor Gundarev with his mistress and a seven-year-old child came to the US Embassy in Athens. Soon the defector was taken to the United States, before which the Greek police detained four "armed to the teeth" employees of the Soviet embassy, who were trying to intercept Gundarev at the building of the American mission. Almost two weeks later, the director of the Russian service of the publication called the security service of Radio Liberty, whose office was then located in Munich: one of the key employees was missing. Oleg Tumanov has not been in touch for more than a day, and in front of the closed door of his apartment, news bulletins have accumulated for several days, which were brought to the editor by the staff of Radio Liberty in the morning. On the same day, February 26, an employee who did not yet know about the disappearance got into the apartment - she brought the washed clothes to the editor. There was a mess inside: the kitchen was littered with unwashed dishes, the food left on the table was spoiled and smelled unpleasant. The pictures that hung on them disappeared from the walls. Tumanov was an avid photographer and collector, but his cameras were missing, and on one of the tables were empty albums for coins and stamps. Only old jackets and a few ties hung in the closets. There were no suitcases either. Two days before that, Tumanov took time off from work, citing poor health. The day before, on Sunday 23 February, a colleague who came to visit Tumanov heard a certain "Alex" call him and offered to meet "in Vienna at an auction." Later it turned out that before the disappearance of Tumanov, he had withdrawn a large sum of cash from his bank account - 20 thousand Deutschmarks ... In this episode of Object of Intrigue, we look at a scrotum concealment device, developed to be worn on the human body. It was designed to hide a miniaturized escape radio, with the idea that enemy officers would never think to thoroughly search the genital area. It was never used in the field, and lingered in a desk drawer for many years.
