According to Live Science, the model of the detected radio station is R-394KKM. The device found has perfect safety and, as archaeologists believe, is working if it is replaced with a battery module. The find was made in the Hambach Forest 30 kilometers west of Cologne. The walkie-talkie was found on a site with cut down trees - it was cleared for a brown coal mine with an open mining method. The radio was in a sealed metal box. The radio was manufactured in 1987. The detected radio station is marked in English, and Latin letters are marked on the keyboard. This means that the device was probably intended for a person who speaks English or German. Other details about the find were not disclosed. Probably a typo was made in the find message. A series of portable radio stations R-394 included the basic device R- 394 "Strizh" and two upgraded R-394K "Strizh-K" and R-394KM "Strizh-KM". R-394KM have been produced since 1987 to replace the R-394K. Share The R-394KM radio station is designed to operate in the frequency range from 1.3 to 13.5 megahertz and has a transmitter range of about 1200 kilometers. The device is made of five modules: power supply, transmitter, encoder, receiver and battery module. This radio station, unlike the earlier version, is equipped with a digital encoder. Each of the modules in case of damage can be completely replaced. Messages using the R-394KM were sent in encoded form in groups of 5 digits. When using amplitude modulation, the sending speed was 12 groups of digits per minute, but when switching to phase modulation, the speed increased to 167 groups per minute. The transmitter module is also equipped with a built-in telegraph key with a memory device. The storage device is powered by a 9 volt battery. The radio receiver is designed for auditory reception of amplitude modulation signals, as well as amplitude and phase telegraphs. The R-394KM radio set included headphones, a belt with additional batteries, a charger, a hand generator, an antenna, a telescopic mast, as well as a set of spare parts. Spare parts were located in the body of the radio station under the plug. Unfortunately, I have a very weak and very rarely received signal, it seems that they have not transmitted for 24 hours a day. In gospel radio programs it is difficult to figure out which denomination, how they use it - from the station itself or bought time. In 2010, when there was a civil war in Colombia for half a century between government forces and the FARC militia, the military conducted an unusual operation to warn all captured Colombian soldiers that they would be rescued soon. It was designed at the time to provide accurate news to occupied areas in English French and German, and to provide news from home for the huge contingent of Canadian military personnel serving and fighting in the Second World War. Since then the ?IS? has gone through a variety of changes, including the name which was changed to Radio Canada International in 1970.? It has been through several moves, from its first location in a former brothel, to the converted Ford Hotel a few years later, to rented office tower space, to the main headquarters of the French service, Radio- Canada. QSL cards such as this one from 1964 were collectors items for shortwave listeners around the world, but also an important way for technicians to verify the quality and reach of the signals to places around the world. RCI still gets requests for QSL cards, but as we no longer have a mail room, nor broadcast on shortwave, there are no more QSL cards. (SWLing Post) It has also gone through a number of language-service changes, from 14 languages during the cold war broadcasting to formerly free countries then under the control of Moscow, to its current five languages, Mandarin, Spanish, Arabic, English and French. RCI offices today in the lower level of the French language headquarters of Radio-Canada in Montreal ( Leo Gimeno- RCI) Other changes include the drastic cuts of 2012 which saw some 80 per cent of staff cut and the cessation of shortwave to become its current online operation. Throughout it all RCI continues to inform on Canadian issues including political, scientific, cultural and societal and provide Canadian viewpoints and positions on world affairs. More here: https://www.rcinet.ca/en/2020/02/25/anniversary-of-radio-canada-international-75-today/ (Mike Terry, Hard-Core-DX Digest, Vol 206, Issue 27) * GERMANY [CANADA non] 75 years of Radio Canada International. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks for posting this, Mike. Many of us fondly recall RCI and the CBC International Service before that. Some of us (I do) may still have our Radio-Canada Shortwave Club membership cards. My first QSL card from the CBC IS was also from 1964. I'm wondering how Marc Montgomery determined that the scan of the one he used for his article (taken from the SWLing Post) was from 1964 ? It's not mentioned there. Could be they have one in the RCI archives? I had sent a scan of mine to Victor Nerenberg when he was still working for RCI when I was helping him with an item for "The Link" entitled "Navigating Our Way Around Solar Flares" about the impact of ionospheric irregularities on GPS, which was broadcast on 27 January 2012. That episode is no longer on the RCI website but I've archived a copy of the ionosphere story here: I'd also like to mention that in the article, Marc Montgomery says "we no longer ... broadcast on shortwave." While technically true, RCI does not themselves broadcast on shortwave, Shortwaveservice (written that way in "Germanesque" by the station owners although in English, we often write it as Shortwave Service) broadcasts "The Link" from 1 kW transmitters at Kall-Krekel, Germany. The current schedule has them on 6005 kHz on Saturdays and Sundays at 11:30 UTC and on 3985 kHz on Sundays at 18:30 UTC. RCI's French program "Tam-Tam Canada" is also broadcast. I haven't listened to them recently, but here is an archived recording of one of the first episodes of "The Link" that was broadcast by Shortwaveservice And that's not all. While not shortwave, "The Link" is also transmitted by radio via VHF, DAB+ to be precise, through World Radio Paris an English-language station broadcasting from Paris and in test mode now from Monaco serving the French Riviera. Scheduled on Fridays at 00:00 and 10:00 CET. They offer a live stream of their programming (including programs from several other stations besides RCI) from their website. (Richard Langley-NB-CAN, wor Febr 27) (BC-DX 1417, 27 February 2020) * Inventing a Bicycle: Huffy Radiobike. ------------------------------------------ In 1955, Huffy introduced their Radiobike. In a false tank, a radio fit on the trunk, a battery pack was attached. Of course, all self-respecting children wanted him, but they got ... not all. The fact is that it cost $ 100 (for example, the Huffy Customliner Deluxe - a bike of the same trim level, but without a radio it cost 60 (and this is expensive)) and talking about those bucks in terms of modern money is about $ 900. In general, it was sold frankly to say it was rotten and in the 56th it was discontinued, about 8500 pieces were produced. Despite the failed sales, the radio bike served as a good advertisement and to some extent raised Huffy to the third place in sales in America by the 1960s. Needless to say, now this great is a valuable trophy for any collection - and copies in a tolerable (not excellent) condition hang on ebay for a few hours. The radio turned on with the key. Just like in any mid-century radio: the lamps are warm. The white pin on the bottom pipe is the antenna. It was equipped with a special battery of the deceased format B for portable radios.
